WordPress Settings Guide (Part 2): Discussion & Media
Manage customer interactions, comment sections, and optimize your asset uploads.
In this second part of our configuration series, we will focus on managing interactions on your platform and understanding how files behave. Setting up your Discussion and Media options correctly ensures a clean, spam-free environment while keeping storage usage efficient.
💬 1. Discussion Settings (Controlling Comments & Spam)
Navigate to Settings → Discussion. This area controls how public users interact with your blog posts and pages. To keep your brand safe from spam bots, configure these critical checkmarks:
- Default post settings: If your website is purely a business brochure or an e-commerce store, you may uncheck “Allow people to submit comments on new posts” to disable comment sections globally.
- Other comment settings: Always check the box for “Comment author must fill out name and email”. This acts as a basic filter to stop anonymous spam.
- Before a comment appears: For maximum security, check “Comment must be manually approved”. This ensures no random text or malicious links show up on your live site without your consent.
🖼️ 2. Media Settings (Image Scaling Standards)
Navigate to Settings → Media. This panel dictates how WordPress automatically crops and sizes images when you upload them to your Media Library:
- Pre-configured Sizing: Website Buildy automatically sets standardized thumbnail, medium, and large dimensions behind the scenes. This ensures your layouts remain perfectly responsive across mobile screens, tablets, and desktops.
- Organizing Uploads: Keep the checkbox “Organize my uploads into month and year-based folders” active. This maintains a clean server infrastructure, making your media assets easy to track.
🚀 Next-Gen Image Compression Active: Remember that our server framework automatically compresses your images into optimized web formats upon upload. While you do not need to alter default media pixels, always try to upload compressed files to maximize your allotted modular storage.
💾 Save Your Settings: Do not forget to scroll to the bottom of your screen and click Save Changes before leaving the page.
